El Milagro Phase 1
Urbanism | Architecutre
Summary
The El Milagro Community Development sits on the boundary between Mission and McAllen
and on the US/Mexico Border. The first of its kind in South Texas, this planned unit
developmentwas designed together with the Rio Grande Valley community via a 5-day
charrette that focused public agencies, economic development organizations, and the private
sector toward a common community vision.
The master plan for the El Milagro Community Development employs endeavors to create complete and connected neighborhoods that
are walkable, bikeable, sustainable, and affordable.
The Rio Grande River is a unique asset that offers its cultural, recreational, and natural amenities to the El Milagro community and the
Rio Grande Valley Region. The plan centers it. With River Vega parks, community gardens, and recreational areas looking to protect the
river while utilizing it to improve quality of life, the El Milagro Community Development will activate more healthy living and reinforce
resilience.
In its engagement with and activation of the river/border, El Milagro serves as a model for riverfront developments throughout the
borderlands.
